Four hundred and fifty-five recruits passed out in Kumasi, 453 in Ho and 348 in Koforidua.

The events at the three training schools were characterised by exciting drills which won the admiration of the public including friends and relatives of the recruits at the respective ceremonies.

The recruits were taken through Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Investigation, Law of Evidence, Acts and Decrees among others. They also went through drill, physical training and weapon handling.

From Kumasi, Donald Ato Dapatem reports that the Director General in charge of Services of the Ghana Police Service, COP, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, who addressed the parade, attributed the recent increasing trend of escape of suspects from police cells to non-adherence to the rules and regulations of the police service and the unnecessary detention of suspects by the police.

“One disturbing fact emerging is that some of these could have been avoided if we had not detained the suspects in the first place, or if we had granted them bail as required by our regulations. Let us stop detaining people unnecessarily and have our peace of mind,” he admonished.

Centres for suspects

He suggested the building of what he termed central holding centres for suspects instead of detaining them in cells as pertained in some countries.

General Recruit Alhassan Dramani Ouatara was adjudged the overall best recruit.

In the last two months police cells in the Volta and the Ashanti regions have experienced jailbreaks. Some of the suspects have been re-arrested while others are still at large.

From Ho, Mary Anane reports that the Director General in charge of Administration of the Ghana Police Service, COP Ms Rose Bio-Atinga, charged the recruits to cultivate the spirit of competence and professionalism as they joined the service.

She reminded the recruits that by successfully passing-out, a lot of responsibilities had been placed on them for which reason they must live up to expectation.

Capacity building

She said the police administration was implementing human resource improvement strategies that would build the capacity of personnel at all levels.

Mr Duke Lamptey emerged the overall best recruit.

From Koforidua, Naa Lamiley Bentsil reports that the Director General in charge of Operations, Mr John Kudalor, cautioned the recruits not to do anything that would tarnish the image of the police service.

Mr Kudalor said it was important for the 348 police recruits to be abreast of the fast changing crime trends which called for sacrifice, hard work, neutrality and dedication.

He urged the all-male recruits to adopt a positive attitude towards their duties and exhibit high standard of professionalism at all times.

The recruits who have by the passing-out ceremony, been  admitted to the police service would be on an 18-month probation.
