Police foil plot to kill Akyem Kwabeng chief; two arrested over GH₵50,000 contract

Two people have been arrested by the Eastern South Regional Police Command for allegedly plotting to kill the chief of Akyem Kwabeng in the Eastern Region.

The arrests were made after an intelligence-led operation uncovered the plan ahead of the chief’s first royal durbar, scheduled for October 17, 2025.

A police statement issued in Kibi on October 12, 2025, and signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Command, DSP David Fianko-Okyere, said the suspects, identified as Emelia Akua Asor and Butuakwa Seth, were apprehended following intelligence received on October 11.

According to the statement, during the operation, Ms Asor offered GH₵50,000 to police officers who had posed as hired killers to murder the chief and another woman said to be lined up for installation as queen mother.

She allegedly instructed her accomplice, Mr Seth, to identify the homes of the intended victims.

Mr Seth reportedly led the officers to both residences and provided a photograph of the chief to aid the planned attack.

The suspects also promised to pay an additional GH₵50,000 after the act had been carried out.

Both suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned soon.

DSP Fianko-Okyere stated that the police remain alert to protect lives and maintain security in the region, particularly for traditional leaders.
