Presby Church kicks against same-sex marriage

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has reaffirmed its earlier decision against the endorsement of same-sex marriage.

At its 11th General Assembly at Abetifii-Kwahu (the highest decision making body of the Church) in 2011, the church took the decision (Decision Nine) to sever relationship with all churches that recognised same-sex marriage.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev Prof. Emmanuel Martey announced this at the official opening of the 15th General Assembly of the Church at Abetifi Kwahu in the Eastern Region last Saturday.

The General Assembly attracted over 350 commissioners and corresponding members from all the 20 presbyteries, including the newly created Asante South Presbytery.

This year’s General Assembly which is on the theme, “Anointing of the Holy Spirit” (1 John 2:20, 27) will among other things, take decisions that will guide the activities of the Church in the coming years.

Unfortunate linkage

The Moderator said since the endorsement and recognition of same-sex marriages by the Presbyterian Church, USA, in June this year, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana unfortunately had been linked to it.

He said the PCG was different from Presbyterian Church, USA, or any other Presbyterian Church and that Presbyterianism was only a system of church governance.

The Moderator said the PCG was a Bible-believing and practising church and did not and would not approve of same-sex marriage.
“The Presbyterian Church of Ghana sees same-sex marriage as ungodly, sinful, unrighteous and “satanic” and therefore, will not put up with such “satanic practice” in any form” he maintained.

The Moderator for that reason called on all Christians in Ghana and all Ghanaians in general to “wake up” against it.

Rt. Rev Prof. Martey said homosexuality should neither be considered as human rights nor a social justice issue.

He added that social argument on the issue had become so effective that homosexuals often succeeded in having rights legislations passed in their favour.

“Even though, they are a small minority they are very well-organised and very militant in their modus operandi” he maintained.

Hope for those who repent

The Moderator added that the Christian who got involved in homosexual practice must be helped by the Church to realise that he or she was living contrary to biblical teachings and needed to be freed from the sinful practice.

He intimated that there was hope for those who realised that the manifestation of sexual desire towards a person of the same-sex was unbiblical and therefore, had the yearning to do God’s will as contained in Scripture.

The Moderator observed that one of the challenges facing the educational sector in general and the Presbyterian schools in particular was the falling standards in the country.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwahu East, Nana Siaw who represented the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere commended the Presbyterian Church for its contributions to the socio-economic development of the country since its establishment in 1828.
