Promote hardworking teachers — Gyekye

The Headmaster of Akyem Oda Attafuah Senior High/Technical School, Mr Johnson Gyekye, has stressed the need for hardworking teachers to be promoted while lazy and recalcitrant ones are reprimanded or demoted.

He said as pivots on whose heads quality education hangs, teachers must be current on modern trends of teaching while the use of power point, marker boards and computers must be on their finger tips.

Mr Gyekye further stated that managers of schools, including headteachers, must also be given orientation on good management of schools, adding that there should be adequate supply of textbooks and other teaching and learning inputs.

Mr Gyekye made the call at the first Speech And Prize-giving Day of the Oda Presbyterian Primary “A” and “C” and kindergarten schools at a ceremony at Akyem Oda last Tuesday.

He noted with concern that, “teachers do not enjoy incremental jumps and this is a big disincentive to the ordinary teachers,” and urged the government to rectify the anomaly to motivate them to do their best.

The headmaster implored chiefs and their elders to institute award schemes for outstanding teachers to supplement the government’s efforts.

“As a matter of fact, education should be devoid of politics,” he emphasised.

The Headmistress of the school, Madam Regina Osam Simpson, said the school (established in 1943) had been transformed to become one of the best in the Birim Central Municipality.

She appealed to the assembly, well-to-do individuals and non-governmental organisations to help reactivate and complete an abandoned school block to put an end to the shift system to check truancy.

Madam Osam Simpson condemned schoolchildren who spent their time on unnecessary games and other social events such as wake-keeping and movies at the expense of their studies.

She appealed to the government, teachers, parents and pupils to play a vital role to improve the standard of  education.

The Assistant Birim Central Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Ms Confidence Dogo, who deputised for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Kwabena Nkansah-Asare, admonished parents to provide their children with their school needs, including food and learning materials, to encourage them to concentrate on their studies.

On behalf of the assembly,  Ms Dogo donated GH¢300 towards the development of the school.

Mr Nelson Ntiamoah, the special assistant to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Oda, Mr William Agyapong Quaittoo, pledged 50 bags of cement for the schools’ projects.
