Relief for Abura Dunkwa as KGL commissions mechanised water system for residents

The people of Abura Dunkwa in the Central Region can now look forward to clean and reliable water supply following the commissioning of a mechanised community water system by the KGL Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the KGL Group.

For decades, residents of the town, with a population of about 50,000, have battled unsafe water sources such as shallow wells and murky streams, exposing them to waterborne diseases and poor living conditions. Their plight worsened recently when the Agona Kwanyarko water treatment plant was shut down due to pollution caused by illegal mining.

Responding to a distress call from the community, led by the Queenmother, Nana Akuwa Kwaawa I, the KGL Foundation constructed and handed over the new water system on October 1, 2025.

“We are excited because children and their mothers will now have more time for studies, economic activities and personal development through this initiative,” Nana Kwaawa I said, adding that access to potable water had been one of the community’s biggest needs.

The Chief of Abura Dunkwa, Nana Owusu Koko II, expressed the community’s gratitude to the Foundation and urged government and other organisations to emulate the gesture. He particularly appealed for support towards refurbishing the town’s hospital to improve healthcare delivery.

An opinion leader, Mr. Samuel Kwesi Afful, also praised the Foundation for easing the burden on women and children, who previously walked long distances in search of water.

The Programmes Manager of KGL Foundation, Mr. Nii Ankonu Annorbah Sarpei, said the project was in line with the organisation’s commitment to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

“KGL Foundation believes in giving back to society. Upon hearing of the community’s need, we responded immediately. This year alone, we have dug 20 boreholes across the country in addition to other development projects,” he said.

He also cautioned against poor maintenance practices, urging the community to take proper care of the facility to ensure its sustainability.

Mr. Sarpei further highlighted the Foundation’s scholarship packages for brilliant but needy students and encouraged parents and guardians in Abura Dunkwa to take advantage of the opportunity.
