Ms Ofori Antwi said even though members of ESPA were prepared for the exercise, it was important that residents everywhere exhibited patriotism and ensured that the workout became a success.

The National Sanitation Day was instituted by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development  (MLGRD) in answer  to the increasingly poor environmental conditions, particularly in the national capital, Accra.

Participation in the first exercise held last month was described as generally poor .

The Sanitation Day is designed such that residents, waste management companies and other interest groups are mobilised on the first Saturday of each month to undertake a general clean-up exercise.

In the exercise, rubbish is swept and gathered into heaps and evacuated to landfill or refuse dump sites.

Furthermore, places that are weedy are cleared and primary and secondary drains that are found choked are desilted to allow for free flow of waste water through them.

Members

According to Ms Ofori Antwi, it is anticipated that 27 members of the association would provide 39 compactors, 22 tricycles with containers, 20 skips and a pick-up truck for Saturday's exercise in Accra.

The Accra Zone of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, which has operations in areas such as  Abossey Okai, Sukura, Alajo, Kotobabi, Kokomlemle, Accra Newtown and Dzorwulu, would in addition provide 10 compactors and 15 skips.

Similarly, J. Stanley Owusu, another waste management company, operates at Awudome, Bubuashie and Kaneshie, and would make available three compactors and a skip.

Ms Ofori Antwi said Liberty Waste, working at Dansoman, Mamprobi and parts of Korle-Bu, all in the Ablekuma South sub-metropolitan assembly of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, would provide four compactors.

Meanwhile, the Zoomlion office in Tema zone is planning to support the exercise with four skips.

Other solid waste management companies that would be supporting the clean-up exercise this Saturday are Catrol Waste, Asadu Royal Waste, Gee Waste, Nabmok Waste, Amanea Waste, Platinum Municipal, ABC Waste and Rural Waste.

According to Ms Ofori Antwi, all the companies have expressed their commitment to participate in Saturday's exercise.

"Our expectation is that residents would come out in their numbers to help us tidy up our surroundings," she stated.
