Sam Nartey George: I’ll ensure Ghana becomes Hub for Artificial Intelligence in Africa
The Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, is confident that with the right vision, Ghana will become the leading hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa by 2028.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025, he outlined his strategic plan for developing Ghana’s AI ecosystem.
"I recently came across a quote that said AI in 2025 will be like Bitcoin in 2013. Jump on the bandwagon now, or risk being left behind. President Mahama has a clear vision for AI, and we intend to take the AI strategy developed by the previous government, review it, and ensure it is fit for purpose. We will engage with the industry and ensure that Ghana becomes the AI hub of the African continent," he stated.
He emphasized the need for collaboration between government agencies, private sector players, and global technology giants to ensure that Ghana not only participates in the AI revolution but leads it.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has a well-defined AI policy that his administration will build upon, improving on the foundation laid by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
"We will achieve this by ensuring that the innovation hubs promised in our manifesto are implemented, and then we will introduce AI alongside the big data initiatives we are developing. In the next four years, Ghana will become the center and hub for AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, data analytics, and data processing on the African continent," he added.
