The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced a comprehensive list of updated fines and penalties for various road traffic infractions, as part of efforts to improve compliance and safety on Ghana’s roads.

The new charges, outlined in a recent notice, cover a wide range of violations, including expired licences, defective vehicle parts, and improper driving documentation. Among the key penalties:

- Expired Driver’s Licence: GH¢225
- Driving Without a Licence: GH¢225
- Faulty Seat Belt: GH¢225
- Worn-Out Tyres: GH¢225
- Smoky Exhaust Emissions: GH¢225
- Expired Vehicle Roadworthy Stickers: GH¢225
- False or Altered Number Plates: GH¢225

Additional infractions such as driving with the wrong class of licence, misuse of learner permits, and defective vehicle components also attract fines of GH¢225 each.

The CEO of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, emphasised the authority’s commitment to enforcing road safety regulations. In a Facebook post, he stated: "The DVLA is implementing these changes to fulfil its mandate of making our roads safer. We kindly ask for your full cooperation as we work together towards this goal."

The updated penalties align with the Road Traffic Regulations, 2022 (L.I. 2180), which empower the DVLA’s Compliance and Enforcement Unit to conduct roadside checks and impose sanctions on offenders.

Motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles meet all roadworthiness standards and that their documentation is up to date to avoid penalties. The DVLA has also warned against the use of fake licences, permits, or number plates, which will be met with strict enforcement.

The move has been welcomed by road safety advocates, who believe stricter penalties will deter violations and reduce accidents. However, some drivers have called for increased public education on the new measures to ensure compliance.

Authorities have assured that the enforcement will be conducted fairly, with offenders given the opportunity to rectify issues where applicable.
