SOS supports children at Chorkor
About 809 children at Chorkor and its environs in the Greater Accra Region have been educated on the need for them to cultivate the habit of saving towards their future.

The beneficiaries were also equipped with basic knowledge on savings, financial ethics and transparency, responsible behaviour and citizenship as well as formal banking.
The programme was sponsored by the SoS Children’s Villages Ghana under its Child Social and Financial Education project.
The project is aimed at equipping the children with the basic knowledge on how to handle their own future.
Speaking at the celebration of the World Aflatoun Day in Accra, the Project Officer of the SoS Children’s Villages, Ghana-Chorkor, Ms Boatemaa Ofosu, said the association was determined to help reduce poverty in the Ghanaian society.
The World Aflatoun Day is celebrated on March 17 every year by the SoS Villages all over the world to provide children with the platform to showcase their talents.
SoS Ghana supports the poor
Ms Ofosu said the SoS Ghana had supported families at Chorkor and its environs with some amount of money to help cater for the children.
The support, she said, was to help develop the capacity of the caregivers (parents) to care for and protect their children.
“Within the programme, the children are our primary beneficiaries while the caregivers are our secondary beneficiaries. This is the reason the caregivers are supported to develop their capacity to care for and protect their children,” she added.
The association, Ms Ofosu said, had also rolled out programmes that would provide support to orphans and vulnerable children in the area.
“We are also currently providing support to some youth in the community to undergo technical and vocational education training for free”, she said.
Aflatoun programmes
The project officer also said her outfit had so far educated the children at Chorkor on social, moral, cultural, economic and religious values.
“Through the various programmes instituted, we are hopeful that the children could make savings on their own without stealing from their parents.
To achieve this, we always encourage them to save a little of the money they are given by their parents daily,she added.

The officer in charge of the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Kweku Mensah Adapaku, said the intervention by the SoS Ghana was timely to help the children to embrace the habit of saving earlier in life.
He said prior to the commencement of the project at Chorkor, most of the children in the community could neither read nor write; a situation he said made teaching very difficult.
“However, the introduction of the Aflatoun programmes have boosted the reading habit of the children”, he said.
