The consignment included 220 pairs of hand gloves, iron shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, wellington boots, and long brooms.

The donation, which was made in line with the Trust’s social responsibility, is to support the National Sanitation Day exercise initiated by the ministry to ensure a clean environment.

Presenting the items yesterday, the Corporate Affairs Manager of SSNIT, Ms Evangeline Amegashie, said many young people who constituted a significant portion of the country’s population were potential contributors to the SSNIT pension fund, hence the need to protect the populace to live a healthy life by ensuring a clean environment.

Ms Amegashie also urged the public to come out in their numbers during the next NSD to help achieve the national sanitation goal.

Self-realisation

For his part, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Julius Debrah, said the objective of the NSD campaign, ultimately, was to create self-realisation among the public that insanitary conditions or filth could lead to the outbreak of epidemics.

He said the NSD had come to stay and, therefore, there was the need for every member of the public to build a positive attitude towards sanitation.

Mr Debrah thanked SSNIT for its support, and said the items would be distributed to all the regions for the upcoming NSD on February 7, 2015.

He urged the management of SSNIT to collaborate with the ministry to achieve its sanitation business module programmes intended to construct toilet facilities and boreholes for interested individuals and organisations across the country.

Appreciation

Mr Debrah also thanked the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong, all organisations and individuals who supported the last national sanitation exercise.
