Emmanuel Matrevi, unemployed, on trial for conspiracy to commit crime and defrauding by false pretence, feigned sickness on the way from court to custody.

While the police car was in motion to the hospital, Matrevi opened the back door and jumped out on the Ofankor-Mile 7 road but the police investigator, with the help of passers-by, apprehended him.

When the trial magistrate was informed, the court remanded him into prison custody instead of the police custody and the case adjourned to January 6, 2015.

Earlier, Matrevi had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢4,000.00 with two sureties but failed to be present in court when he needed to.

The sureties finally brought Matrevi to court and withdrew their services from the bail.

Presenting the facts to the court, the Prosecutor, Sgt Eric Darko, said the complainants in the case are Beauty Ablena and Rosemary Awuku, residents of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

Sgt Darko said in October 2013, Ablena and Awuku heard an advert on radio about a microfinance company by name Omanfofro Investment Company Limited at Achimota, requesting interested persons to apply for a soft loan.

He said Ablena and Awuku, who needed money to expand their businesses, became interested and proceeded to the office of the said microfinance.

Matrevi and his accomplice, now at large, demanded 15 per cent of any amount they would take as collateral. The two, therefore, gave  Matrevi a total of GH¢1,500 for the GH¢5,000  they each needed.

Sgt Darko said Matrevi promised that their loan would be ready in two weeks, but failed to honour his promise.

Several attempts made by the two women to get their money back or the loan were not successful.

The prosecutor said on December 14, 2013, they went to the office to demand their money from Matrevi, only to find the place closed.

Sgt Darko said they then lodged a complaint at the Mile 7 Police Station and the accused was arrested at his hideout at Aburi in the Eastern Region.

During investigations, it came out that the company was not registered with the Registrar General’s Office.
