Tema to get modern hospital. Work to begin in November this year

The Ministry of Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Synergy Group B.V, a construction company based in The Netherlands, to construct a US$250 million modern hospital complex in Tema.

The project, barring any last- minute hitches, is expected to begin in November this year.

 When completed, the new 420-bed capacity hospital, with specialised medical centres such as accident, emergency and trauma, is intended to improve onhealthcare in the city.

Initiative

At the ceremony in Accra, the Minister of Health, Mr Alex Segbefia, described the MoU as a laudable step towards achieving quality health care.

He said with the growing population in the metropolis and its surrounding communities, there was the urgent need to expand care facilities to meet the increasing demands of patients in the area.

The minister, therefore, expressed the hope that the project would be completed in time to address the health needs of the people.

The local representative of Synergy Group B. V in Ghana and Chairman of Tividasco Limited, Reverend Joseph Kwesi  Avemegah, commended the ministry for the initiative, describing it as timely.

Background

The Tema General Hospital was built in 1954 to cater for workers who constructed the Tema Harbour. It was later handed over to the government for public use.

The geographical location of the hospital, its surrounding road network and commercial nature of the metropolis has made the hospital one of the busiest in the country as it serves surrounding towns and villages.

It is also the major referral point for all other clinics and hospitals in the metropolis and the first port of call for most of the numerous road accidents, especially those that happen on the motorway, as well as other industrial accidents.
