Tetegu residents complain of growing insanitary conditions

A refuse heap at Tetegu Oblogo New Site, near Weija, left uncollected for several months has become a health hazard to the residents.

Residents and passers-by are complaining of the unbearable foul smell emanating from the dump, and which has attracted influx of insects, particularly houseflies, to the area.

The inhabitants, under the circumstances, have registered their displeasure and called on the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) to have the refuse immediately cleared.

Residents complain

A resident, who gave her name only as Esther, said the rubbish had been sitting at the spot where it was for the past six months without anyone attempting to clear it.

She said it was unfortunate and somewhat unbelievable that some undisciplined residents could turn the land in question into a refuse dump when it was so close to residential quarters.

She said with the menace of cholera hanging in the air, it would not be surprising if there should be an outbreak of the disease in the area.

Another resident complained of the lukewarm attitude exhibited by the Ga South Municipal Assembly with regard to the unauthorised dumping of refuse at the site. He said even though a report had been made, the assembly had not shown any interest in the matter.

He said some time ago, personnel from the AMA came round to assess the situation. Since then, he said, no one had been there and the state of affairs was growing from bad to worse.

He said the situation got terrible when the floodgates of the Weija Dam was opened. He said when that happened, the refuse got mixed up with the water and the community was strewn with the refuse.

Nana Ama, also a resident, says she has resorted to staying away from  Tetegu because of the growing poor sanitation situation, and would only move back to live there when the problem was resolved.

“Nobody listens to us when we speak. We only have to live individual lives of cleanliness and pray that we do not fall victim to any disease,” she said.
