The suspects were identified as Ishmael Amewu, 20, a barber; George Menlar, alias Trigger, 21, a trader, and Francis Asare, alias Joe, 26, a driver.

The residents, who had spotted the three young men in a taxi in the wee hours of May 29, 2016, are said to have questioned them.

However, the suspected car snatchers, who could not convince the residents, are said to have sped off but were given a hot chase by the residents.

How it happened

Briefing the media yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Timothy Bonga, said the three young men had hired the services of the driver of an ash yellow Toyota taxi, with registration number GG 2679 -16, from the Awoshie Junction to New Bortianor about 1 a.m. on May 29, 2016.

On reaching New Bortianor, he said, the three suspects attacked the driver of the taxi with a screw driver and overpowered him.

One of the suspects is said to have pushed the driver out of the car and taken over the steering.

A few hours later, Mr Bonga said, some residents of Langma spotted the three suspects in possession of the said taxi.

Being suspicious, he said, the residents questioned the presence of the three in the vicinity but the suspects fumbled and then sped off.

The residents then raised an alarm, while they pursued them, a situation which attracted more residents.

Arrest

Mr Bonga said while the suspects were being pursued, two of them jumped out of the taxi and escaped, while Asare, who was driving the taxi, was arrested.

He said the residents impounded the taxi and handed over Asare and the car to the police.

During interrogation, Mr Bonga said, Asare mentioned the two as his accomplices and led the police to arrest them.

A search on the two suspects led to the retrieval of two wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The three suspects are said to have confessed to the crime.
