Treat street-naming with seriousness — Veep

Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has charged metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to attach seriousness to the ongoing street-naming exercise, since it is a prerequisite for effective planning for speedy development.

He said the government’s decision to embark on the street naming project was, among other things, informed by the quest to ensure effective planning for the provision of services to the people at the local level.

Mr Amissah-Arthur, who gave the advice after he had inspected some street-naming projects in the Wa municipality in the Upper West Region, expressed satisfaction with the level of the exercise in the area and urged other MMDAs to emulate the example.

He was accompanied by the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Suleimana, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Julius Debrah, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha, and other government officials.

The project involves naming of streets and numbering of properties along them.

Named streets

The Vice-President inspected the Hilla Limann Highway, the Ferguson Crescent, J.J. Rawlings High Street, the Insurance Street and the Kpaguri Street and lauded the municipal chief executive for timeously delivering on the exercise.

Mr Putiaha told the Daily Graphic that the street-naming exercise would be completed in the municipality by the end of this month (September, 2014) and  the house-numbering by the close of the year.

Among the objectives of the project are to ensure quicker response from  emergency service providers by easily identifying locations of need; improve general delivery of services; and serve as a tool for providing more efficient delivery of municipal services in urban areas. It also seeks to provide location addresses to facilitate easy identification of places and improve tax/revenue collection by revenue agencies.

The Vice-President, who is also the Chairman of the Police Council, later visited the Upper West Regional Police Headquarters, where he conferred with police chiefs after he had inspected facilities there.
