The two, Toufique Salisu, alias Arm Burger, 30, a Ghanaian, and Umaro Elgo, 50, a Fulani herdsman, and a third suspect, identified only as Quara, were said to have mounted roadblocks at the Old Jejeti Junction on the highway on different occasions in the night and robbed passengers of huge sums of money and mobile phones at gunpoint.

Out of coverage

The Old Jejeti Junction is an out-of-coverage area for all mobile phones, thus, making it impossible for the police to immediately respond to distress calls.

While the Nkawkaw Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr James Sarfo-Peprah, personally led his men to Yeji in the Brong Ahafo Region to flush out Umaro from his den, the Crime Officer, Nana Kwaku Duah, also led the second batch to apprehend Toufique at his hide out at Salaga in the Northern Region.

A locally manufactured pistol, a knife, an old sword and cash of 10,000 CFA were found in Toufique’s room.
A talisman was also found on him.

Suspects remanded

Both men have been charged with robbery at the Mpraeso Circuit Court presided over by Madam Mariam Senare and have been remanded in custody to re appear on July 17.

Briefing the Daily Graphic at Nkawkaw yesterday, Mr Sarfo-Peprah said on June 2, 2015 at about 9 p.m., the robbers stopped three buses belonging to the O.A. Travel and Tours company at the Old Jejeti Junction which were moving in a convoy from Kumasi to Aflao en-route to Togo.

He indicated that the occupants of the buses, mostly traders, were forced to lie down at gunpoint while the robbers took away unspecified sums of money and mobile phones from them and severely beat some of them.

According to Mr Sarfo-Peprah, upon a tip-off, the Nkawkaw Police arrested Toufique at Salaga and Umaru at Yeji.

He stated that Toufique, who was the first to be apprehended, allegedly told the police that one Karim Fulani took him to Yeji where he collected GH¢6000.00 from Umaru and one Quara, both Fulanis, who also took part in the robbery.
