They are the Embassy of the United States of America in Ghana and Stanbic Bank Ghana. They presented a cheque for GH¢10,000 each.

The Embassy of the United States of America is sponsoring the Anti-Corruption category of the awards, while the Stanbic Bank is sponsoring the Sports and Business categories.

Objective of awards

At a presentation ceremony in Accra on Monday, the President of GJA, Mr Affail Monney, thanked the two bodies and said their support was well appreciated.

The awards ceremony, which would be held on the theme, “Ghana in search of reliable energy to power development and the role of the media”, will have the principal of Africa Power Systems Management, Mr Kwaku Andoh Awortwi, as the Special Guest of Honour.

Mr Monney said this year’s event was aimed at encouraging and motivating journalists to champion the cause of finding a lasting solution to the country’s power crisis.

He said the power crisis had taken a toll on everybody, including the media, and expressed the hope that the theme will encourage journalists to play the frontal role in helping to find solutions to the country’s power crisis.”

The sponsors

The Public Affairs Counsellor of the Embassy of the United States of America, Mr Daniel Fennell, said the sponsorship formed part of America’s efforts at assisting the association to encourage journalists to work harder.

He added that the USA was committed to ensuring that journalists who excelled in their work would be duly recognised to encourage them to do more.

The Head of Marketing and Communications of the Stanbic Bank, Mr Mawuko Afadzinu, said a lot was needed to be done to motivate journalists to provide solutions to some of the challenges facing the country through their reports.

He said Stanbic Bank Ghana would, therefore, continue to support the association’s awards and training programmes to improve the capacity of journalists.
