Out of that number, 27 people, made up of nine males and eight females, were killed as against 42 deaths recorded within the period under review last year.

The UWR Police Commander of  the MTTU, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Joseph Oppong, who made the figures available in an interview with The Mirror.

He attributed the trend to sensitisation programmes embarked on by the unit in collaboration with various stakeholders such as the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Road Safety Commission and the Road Safety Management Services.

DSP Oppong said 71 vehicles and 67 motor bikes were involved in the accidents which caused various degrees of injuries to 142 people, with 38 of them being serious.

He said the Wa Municipality topped the list, recording 55 accidents out of which 19 people lost their lives.

DSP Oppong attributed most of the accidents to careless driving, speeding, mechanical problems, poor road network among others.

He said 16 pedestrians were also reportedly knocked down during the year under review, three less than the figure for last year.

He called on the public to assume full responsibility for their actions and stop pleading for suspects who fell  foul of the law in order to make it socially acceptable and easier for the law to take its course.

The regional MTTU commander called on the general public to approach  the police whenever the need arises, adding that  they were ready to enhance and guarantee domestic security and safety on the roads in order to enable travellers and motorists to arrive at their destinations safely.
