That, he said, would help provoke people’s thoughts and actions toward the positive transformation of society.

Mr Ashigbey made the call at Keta during the 10th anniversary celebration of Jubilee Radio, the first successful, private commercial radio station in the Volta Region.

Ignorance

Mr Ashigbey bemoaned the current situation where because of press freedom, so much misinformation was often aired and called for a differentiation between appropriate information and misinformation.

He congratulated Jubilee Radio for working hard enough to stay in business despite initial challenges and opening a sister station in Ho.

Mr Ashigbey urged Jubilee Radio to be guided by media ethics in its quest to mobilise the people for development.

Jubilee Radio

The Chief Executive Officer of Jubilee Radio, Reverend Joseph Adika, in an address, said the establishment of the radio station in 2004 was a call and an act of God to lead Eweland on a path of love, righteousness, justice and freedom.

He said despite the initial suspicion that the station was owned by either the NPP or NDC, it was now obvious that the station was not the mouthpiece of any political party.

Rev. Adika said the station had rather helped in raising political consciousness among the people and in partnership with BUSAG, pushed for the introduction of legislation in parliament to stop negative fishing practices.

The Member of Parliament for Keta, Mr Richard Quashigah, said the radio station had brought tremendous change to Anlo and commended it for remaining non-partisan.

“Frankly speaking, Jubilee Radio has performed above board and one can say it has been responsible and ethical,” he added.

The Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Sylvester Tornyeavah, stressed the important role Jubilee Radio had played in bringing peace to the Anlo State in the face of the protracted chieftaincy dispute and pledged his support for the station.

Powerful tool

The Volta Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Makafui Woanya, said radio was a powerful tool for relaying information and therefore, its programmes needed to be moderated in order to ensure sanity in the country.

The President and Founder of the Volta Foundation, Dumega Raymond Okudzeto, who chaired the function, appealed to the people to patronise the programmes of the station and advertise on it to help keep it in business.
