Police barriers have also been mounted on all major routes and entry points to the town to ensure that the exercise is carried out successfully.

Heavily armed police and military personnel thoroughly search the vehicles before they are allowed entry.

Security has also been beefed up in the town to prevent any unforeseen event resulting from the current tension created by the war threats by the two royal families in the Dagbon State, the Abudus and the Andanis.

The outgoing Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that the decision to search vehicles was taken by the Yendi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC).

Background

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II, was killed on March 27, 2002 during clashes between the Abudus and the Andanis.

The Abudus and Andanis had been involved in violent clashes in the past over chieftaincy disputes.

At a press conference held in Yendi on January 11, 2016, the Abudu Family issued a two-week ultimatum to the government and the Asantehene-led committee mediating the

Dagbon chieftaincy dispute to facilitate processes that would grant them access to the old Gbewaa Palace to enable them to perform the final funeral rites of the late Naa Abdulai Mahamadu IV or they would use other means necessary to gain access to the palace.

But the Andanis called the Abudus bluff at a press conference on Saturday, January 23 by declaring their readiness to face the Abudus squarely should they attempt to use force or other means to gain access to the palace.

These claims and counter-claims have generated some tension within the Yendi municipality, the seat of the Dabgon State.

REGSEC

Alhaji Limuna explained that more troops had been sent to Yendi to augment the personnel detailed to the town.

He said the REGSEC would implement decisions taken by the Asentehene-led Committee of Eminent Chiefs.

Advice

“The eminent chiefs will invite the leaders of the two families to negotiate on the issue on whether to go to the old Gbewaa Palace or not,” he said, and added, “They (Abudus and Andanis) all have to at least compromise on the issue to reach a win-win situation.”

“We need to take a decision that will ensure that tension in the town eases,” Alhaji Limuna said.

He assured the public that REGSEC would work to ensure that the peace and tranquillity in the area and the region as a whole was not breached.

He also called on the leadership of the two families to calm their followers as the authorities sought a solution to the problem.
