The opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) has planned a street protest in Accra on Thursday, August 6, 2026, dubbed "Democracy under attack."
According to the party, the leaders of the protest march will present three petitions to key state institutions in relation to that they say was concerns about Ghana’s current constitutional order and democratic principles.
According to the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, the protest march was intended to draw attention to the need for constitutional officials and institutions to uphold justice, fairness, accountability, due process and institutional independence.
“Our objective is neither confrontation nor disorder. Our objective is constitutional engagement,” he said.
Mr. Boakye explained that the group will present three separate petitions as part of the exercise.
“We shall present three petitions. The first will be at the Supreme Court, second at the Presidency, and the third, we will send our leadership in Parliament with some elders in the party to present to Prliament,” he stated.
The march will begin with participants converging at the community centre before proceeding to the Supreme Court for the first petition presentation, using the Efua Sunderland area and continuing towards the Ako Adjei Interchange to present the petition to the presidency.
The procession will end at the main entrance of the Jubilee House, where a petition will be presented to the President.
“We expect a massive, massive, massive turnout. We are fighting for the survival, the spirit and the soul of our democracy,” Mr Boakye added.
He further indicated that the Ghana Police Service has been notified about the demonstration and that security arrangements have been agreed upon.
Mr Boakye warned individuals who may attempt to disrupt the protest, saying they would be dealt with according to the law.
“Those who intend to come and cause problems, to cause mayhem, you will be arrested and you will face the law,” he cautioned.
He urged participants to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly, adding that the official dress code for the protest march is black and red to symbolise mourning what the organisers describe as threats to Ghana’s democracy.
