Two passengers on two different buses have been arrested by the Highway Patrol team of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region for possessing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
Issifu Inussah and Kofi Antwi were arraigned before the Kumasi Circuit Court and charged with illegal possession of substances suspected to be narcotics.
Their pleas were not taken and the court, presided over by Mrs Afia Adu-Amankwah, remanded them into prison custody to reappear on October 12, 2015.
Meanwhile, the substances have been sealed and forwarded to the forensic laboratory in Accra for analysis.
Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector of Police Mrs Comfort Kyei Baffour, told the court that the complainants in the case were personnel from the Police Highway Patrol team.
She said on September 15 this year at around 1:30 p.m, while on duty on the Kumasi-Sunyani road, the team intercepted a passenger Benz bus heading towards Kumasi near Mankraso.
She said a search conducted on the passengers revealed three parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotics concealed in a polythene bag in a backpack.
Chief Inspector Kyei Baffour said Issifu Inussah claimed ownership of the bag and was arrested.
In the other arrest, she said the accused person, Kofi Antwi, who was also a passenger on an Obuasi-bound bus was arrested by members of the highway patrol team when they found a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be narcotics in his back pocket.
According to the police, he mentioned one Baba as his supplier but failed to lead the police to arrest him.
