Esther Enyonam Akosua Pekyi after her arrest

Woman, 23, arrested for pouring acid on boyfriend

After seven months of living under various disguises, the 23-year-old woman who has been on the run for allegedly pouring acid on her boyfriend at Madina has been apprehended by the police.

The suspect, Esther Enyonam Akosua Pekyi, was alleged to have poured acid on Eric Ohemeng, a 25-year-old third-year student of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) when Eric decided to break up their relationship.

Esther was arrested at Dansoman last Saturday when she got down from a taxi to meet her ex-lover while the police laid ambush.

She is said to have been disguising herself with a veil around her head and believed to have initially absconded to Togo and then to Aflao in the Volta Region.

The suspect, who also cut her long hair and changed her mobile phone contact, is said to have later moved to Kasoa, where she was hiding until her boyfriend, with the help of the police, arranged a meeting with her, leading to her arrest.

Admission

A police source said the suspect would soon be arraigned.

The source said Esther had admitted in her caution statement to the offence and had told the police that she was aggrieved when Eric proposed a break-up of their relationship.

Esther, unemployed, who lived with her parents at Madina, is said to have told the police that she contacted an auto mechanic at Madina for some acid with the intention of drinking it to end her life.

However, she said on June 25, 2016, she went to Eric’s house at Bubiashie in Accra with some of the acid in a water bottle and attempted to drink it in the presence of Eric and two of his friends who had come to visit him.

With the intervention of the friends of his boyfriend, the police source said, the acid was taken from Esther, after which Eric agreed to accompany her to her house at Madina.

While at her house, the source said, an argument ensued between the two. Esther went to her room, took some of the  acid and poured it on Eric.

Elated family

Eric, who has since recovered after battling with his life at the 37 Military Hospital, told the Daily Graphic that his family was elated about the arrest of his assailant.

He expressed the hope that it would serve as a lesson to the public to desist from the use of acid to vent their spleen on those they perceived to have offended them.
