‘Women play key role in food security’

The Executive Director of the Development Action Association (DAA), Mrs Lydia Sasu, says women, especially those in rural areas, can play a key role in ensuring food security if they are united.

That, she said, would also provide an opportunity for the government as well as policy makers to critically access issues relating to food security to overcome systematic challenges that limit economic opportunities of women farmers.

These opportunities, she said were access to land, market, quality seeds, for their agricultural production as well as information that would help enlighten them about policies in the country to help improve their livelihood.

Mrs Sasu made this call during a  dialogue between policy makers and rural women farmers at Amasaman in the Ga-West District

The forum organised on the theme, “The Role of Rural Women Farmers in Food Security”, was put together by the DDA and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).

About the dialogue

The aim of the dialogue was for the women to understand the policies and discuss how they can apply them in their daily lives.

It was also to help the women learn how to engage policy makers on better ways to increase food production, and how to continue cultivating food crops on a large scale.

Mrs Sasu , however, said the DDA would continue to empower the rural woman to work hard to provide food for the society.

In her address, the Gender officer at FARA, Madam Ann Delay Apekey, said though rural women played very important roles in contributing to food security in the country, they had no voice when it came to laws and policy making on agricultural produce.

For her part, a representative from the Women in Agriculture Development Directorate, Madam Victoria Tsekpo , said it was the aim of the directorate to protect the women farmers and as such the need to engage women in decision making.
