The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, officially handed over the uncompleted housing units to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT ) in March this year to be completed within 18 months.

The Head of Corporate Affairs of SSNIT, Ms Eva Amagashie, said 37 contractors under the consultancy of Messer Module Group started work on the project in June.

Officials of SSNIT visited the project site yesterday to find out the state of work on the various housing units.

A number of contractors and their workers were busy at work on many of the blocks during the visit.
Ms Amagashie said work on each block was expected to be completed within 18 months of resumption of work.

Background
The SSNIT Board earlier approved GH¢195 million for the completion of the 1,537 housing units which were started in 2006 but work stalled in 2008 due to lack of funding.

The trust is expected to complete the project within 18 months and sell the units to civil and public servants.

The  nationwide project, consisting of more than 4,700 housing units at different locations, was initiated under the Kufuor administration.

The Borteyman component is made up of 744 single room and 792 two-bedroom apartments.
Road and drain construction, water and electricity supply, as well as a central sewage system and a market, will be provided as part of the project.

The affordable housing project, comprising those in Koforidua, Kumasi, Tamale, Kpone and Wa, form part of the government’s intervention to address the outstanding 1.7 million housing deficit.

In a related development, Alhaji Dauda said upon completion of the Borteyman project by SSNIT, other affordable housing projects in other parts of the country would be tackled.
