The Communications Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Robert Coleman, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, indicated that the company was set to unveil the waste equipment at a ceremony in Accra by the weekend to indicate it’s readiness to fight filth at the grass roots level.

He said the rapid population growth and changes in people’s lifestyles had led to an escalation in the production of solid waste in the country an, therefore, the company had improved upon its manual tricycle waste collection to a motorised version known as “Moto King”.

He added that it was for this reason that 5,000 of the waste equipment had been provided for use by the MMDAs.

“This support programme by Zoomlion is targeted at producing over 10,000 jobs, the reduction of wasterelated disasters, the improvement in public health, among many other benefits,” Mr Coleman said.

He added that the National Sanitation Day (NSD), which was a laudable initiative, had not been effective due to the lack of adequate waste equipment to support the programme.

“This challenge will be a thing of the past since these waste management equipment will be used to support the programme,” he stated.

Other activities

Touching on some of the activities the company was embarking upon, he said a waste transfer station known as “ZoomPak” had been constructed to serve as a waste collection point to reduce the pressure of travelling long distances to landfill sites.

Mr Coleman said the facility, which would be replicated in other regions, had been upgraded to recycle plastics, treat medical waste among other types of waste.

He stated that a nationwide waste bin distribution project was also about to kick-start to ensure that every household had a waste bin.

“Our personnel are currently on the field collecting the necessary data to facilitate the effective implementation of this programme,” he pointed out.

Ghana currently generates over 5.5 million tonnes of waste annually. The various metropolis and municipalities generate 0.75kg of solid waste each day, and 0.45kg in other communities, giving an average waste generation of 0.60kg per capita per day.
