Take extra care of yourselves in your old age - Aged advised

The Municipal Health Director for La Nkwantanang-Madina, Dr Priscilla Anima Opoku, has advised the aged to take their health issues more seriously as their old age could trigger some health challenges.

She said health facilities were there in the municipality for all the people, including the aged to provide them with quality health care, stressing “healthy people translate into healthy growth”.

“I want to stress that you, the aged, must adopt healthy lifestyles to promote a long life span. Develop good hobbies, drink a lot of water and fluids and avoid alcoholism and smoking. Renew your National Health Insurance (NHIS) regularly to seek health services when the need arises,” the Municipal Health Director advised.

Dr Mrs Opoku gave the advice at a health talk at the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly’s (LaNMMA) engagement with the aged as part of the celebration of the 12  anniversary of the assembly at the forecourt of the assembly at Madina.

The La Nkwantanang- Madina Municipal Assembly was carved out of the Ga East Municipal Assembly in June 2012. The assembly currently has a staff strength of 312 with a total population of 220,757, consisting of 109,040 males and 111,717 females.

Dr Mrs Opoku stressed that the aged in the municipality were their cherished and esteemed stakeholders who often gave directions and wisdom not only in the health service but across all the other sectors because the aged in the municipality worked in all the sectors and they were of immense benefit to the municipality in general.

She said as the aged grew, their brains and bodies experienced wear and tear affecting their health and body functions. She added that lifestyles, bad habits and eating patterns also affected the aged, saying “As they grow, their immune systems are compromised leading to morbidities and even mortalities”.

Success

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, mentioned the success the municipality had chalked up, which included education, health, water, sanitation, roads, transport, security, local government development, energy and pro-poor and vulnerability mitigation interventions, among others, and thanked her predecessors, the workers and the entire municipality, including the aged for the various roles they played for the past 12 years.

The MCE entreated the current staff to be inspired and motivated by the sacrifices of their predecessors and the aged to elevate the assembly to the next level that they wanted.

Consultation

The leader of the aged in the municipality, Richard Annan, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed their profound gratitude to the assembly for the honours done them. He pledged that they were always available for any developmental consultation by the assembly if the need be.

Each of the aged, who numbered over 300 from the 15 electoral areas in the municipality, received parcels, which contained food items, including rice, sugar, mackerel, maize, oil, tom brown and tea bags, among others.

The assembly also presented 100 plastic chairs to the aged association, which is popularly called ‘Shalom’ for their meetings. As part of the programme, the Parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Madina Constituency, Robert Lamptey, presented an amount of GH¢ 2,000 cash each to three of the aged, Husein Zakaria, 105 years; Josephine Kemervor, 101 years, and Manasseh Yao Kumah Agbleta, 94 years for their good lifestyles.
