MTN Ghana Foundation donates medical equipment to Korle Bu maternity block

The MTN Ghana Foundation has donated medical equipment valued at GH¢129,500 to the maternity unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The donation was made as part of activities marking the celebration of MTN Ghana Foundation’s eighth anniversary.

  • The items include:
    Eight mobile examination lamps
    Radiant warmers
    12 instrument trolleys
    Six multifunction delivery beds
    Suction machines
  • Presenting the items, Mr. Robert Kuzoe, the Executive Secretary of the Foundation recounted MTN’s relationship with Korle Bu which he said dates back to 2009 when MTN refurbished the second floor of the maternity ward and stocked the ward with medical equipment at the request of the Women’s Caucus in Parliament.

The Board of MTN Ghana Foundation at the time approved $600,000 for the refurbishment during which 11 delivery rooms, a theatre and a recovery ward, doctors' restrooms, and a changing room were refurbished. The project has been the health flagship project of the MTN Ghana Foundation.

During the presentation, the hospital announced that since the facility was refurbished in 2009, a total of 26,919 babies have been delivered in that unit.

The Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe said the additional donation of equipment will greatly enhance the work of doctors, midwives and nurses and ultimately contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Receiving the items, Professor Samuel Amenyi Obed, Head of Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology, thanked MTN Foundation for its continuous support towards the hospital. He said, “The labour ward is where life begins, therefore, it should be a happy environment, instead of the battlefield it has become due to the lack of equipment to help expectant mothers”.

“We assure MTN that the hospital will take good care of the equipment to help mothers deliver their babies safely,” he added.

Since the establishment of the Foundation eight years ago, MTN says it has invested over GH¢21.5 million in 102 community development projects in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.
