NHIA staff donate blood to Korle Bu

Staff of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) have been cautioned to desist from charging unapproved fees for service they rendered to the public.

Over the years, staff of the NHIA have been accused of charging unapproved fees, technically called co-payment in the rendering of service to stakeholders.

The Deputy Director of the Membership and Provider Relations of the NHIA, Ms Adelaide Bunatal, made this appeal during a blood donation exercise organised by the Greater Accra Regional office of the NHIA.

She described such activities as illegal and said “such co-payments undermine subscriber confidence in the scheme and the whole purpose of health insurance,”.

Blood donation

The blood donation exercise brought together all the staff of the 14 NHIA district offices of the Greater Accra Region.

The donors were also screened of their haemoglobin levels, blood pressure, as well as blood groups and other related diseases.

Ms Bunatal called on all the offices of the NHIA in the country to replicate what the Greater Accra Regional office had done.

She stressed that blood donation was the NHIA’s corporate social responsibility agenda of ensuring quality healthcare for its subscribers.

Blood shortage

Addressing the donors before the exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the NHIA, Mr Lawrence Amartey, said the shortage of blood at the Korle Bu blood bank could not be underestimated and overlooked.

He said the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) was bedeviled with a lot of challenges, noting that a lot of Ghanaians had not developed the habit of voluntary donation.

That, he said, informed the regional office’s decision to organise such an exercise.

He called on Ghanaians to develop the habit of voluntary donation, adding that one needed to donate at least every four months to boost the stock of blood at the blood bank.
