One family member of each El-Wak stampede victim will get automatic enlistment into Ghana Armed Forces - Brogya Genfi

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Brogya Genfi, has announced that one family member of each of the six victims who lost their lives in the El Wak Stadium stampede will be given the opportunity for automatic enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), should they express interest.

While that offer provides a direct pathway, their credentials will still be assessed like any other recruit to ensure they meet the required standards for military service, the deputy minister said.

He made the announcement during a visit to one of the bereaved families, where he extended both his personal condolences and that of the government and added that, President John Mahama, who is the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, directed him to inform the families about the opportunity [Watch attached video below].

He further noted that recruitment opportunities are available in every region, but the tragic incident occurred largely because many applicants insisted on coming to Accra, the capital, despite options available elsewhere.

This heavy concentration of applicants, he said, contributed to the unfortunate overcrowding that led to the deadly stampede.
