Private medical laboratories call for reduction in NHIA tariffs

The Association of Private Medical Laboratories (APML) Ghana has called on the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to, as a matter of urgency, hold a negotiation meeting with its members for a reduction in the tariffs imposed on their operations.  According to the association, the imposition of what it described as unrealistic tariffs by the NHIA on the operations of medical laboratories had affected their businesses and charged the NHIA to resolve the situation.

Communique

These concerns were contained in a communique signed at the end of the association’s first annual general meeting in Accra.

Signed by its President, Mr Alexander Martin-Odoom, and the General Secretary, Mr Alabira Iddrisu Alhassan, it said, “The NHIA must decouple tariffs within the capitation
policy for private independent medical laboratories from those of the hospitals and clinics.

“It must also institute a separation of services component for the private independent medical laboratories.”
The communique said the association had resolved to conform to the regulations stipulated by the Allied Health Professions Regulatory Act to give the consumer quality and reliable results in their operations.

New officers

It said at the end of its meeting, a new national executive council was elected for a two-year term to steer the affairs of the association.

It listed the new executive members as Mr Alexander Martin-Odoom, President; Mr Albert Moses Vice-president; Mr Alabira Iddrisu Alhassan, General Secretary, Ms May Adaeze Teye-Nor Hanson, Organising Secretary, and Mr Matthew Effah Sekyere, Treasurer.
