Atiwa sensitises residents on street naming

The District Chief Executive for Atiwa, Mr Emanuel Atta Twum, has stated that only names of individuals, including chiefs who have contributed significantly towards the development of the area and had passed away, will be used in the street-naming exercise in the district.

He came out with the directive in an answer to a question as to whether streets in the area would be named after business entities at a public forum at Kwabeng, the capital of the Atiwa District, on Friday, December 27, 2013.

The forum, which was to sensitise the chiefs and people of Atiwa to the street-naming exercise, was attended by a cross-section of the public.

The assemblies have been mandated by the President to name every street in their areas of jurisdiction to, among others, make it possible to easily locate houses and other establishments.

In carrying out the exercise, the Atiwa District Assembly decided to involve the chiefs and people to come out with suitable names for the exercise.

No business entity

According to the DCE, under no circumstance should business entities be used to identify streets since that only advertised such business at the expense of individuals who had contributed to the development of the communities.

Rejection

According to Mr Atta Twum, although the assembly would not impose names on the streets, it would not hesitate to reject names of individuals, including chiefs and businessmen, who were alive as well as business entities, since that would only advertise such individuals and businesses at the expense of the people.

He, therefore, asked the people to come out with appropriate names for the streets to serve as bait to others to help improve society.

Double naming

The District Planning Officer, Mr Michael Agyeman, who took the gathering through the modalities of the exercise, said under no circumstance should names with similar pronunciations but different spellings be used.

Existing recognised and historical street names, according to him, would be retained.

Property rate

The District Co-ordinating Director, Madam Stella Owusu Aduomi, was of the view that the exercise would improve property rate collection for the assembly for its development programmes.

After a lengthy deliberation on the issue, which the people considered appropriate since it would open up the area to tourists and investors, a second meeting was agreed during which the community would come out with the names for the exercise to take off on time.
