Caution supporters not to flout traffic regulations. Political parties told
The Commander of the Accra Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Anderson Fosu–Ackaah, has advised political parties to educate their supporters to observe road traffic regulations during the political campaign season ahead of the November 7, 2016 general election.

That, he said, was because most political parties and their followers flouted traffic rules during campaigns by using unregistered motorbikes, vehicles bearing DV number plates, overloaded vehicles, and crossing red lights at traffic intersections.
“The law will not be relaxed during the political campaign period. Any offender will be dealt with according to the law,” Mr Fosu-Ackaah said during the 2015 end-of-year get-together for personnel of the Accra Central MTTD last Sunday.
The annual get-together, popularly known as the West Africa Security Service Association (WASSA), usually marked the end of the calendar year for the security services.
This year’s WASSA was preceded with a clean-up exercise at the Accra Central MTTD offices and the immediate surroundings.
Congestion
Mr Fosu-Ackaah said it had been observed that “political party supporters who attend political rallies overlooked traffic rules, apart from causing inconvenience to commuters on the road.”
He said managing traffic in the Accra Metropolis was challenging, as the roads had become congested due to the increasing number of vehicles.
He said the Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) registered and licensed 41,000 vehicles over the period January to April this year.

Mr Fosu–Ackaah said on the average 24 people were knocked down daily in Accra and that the department had decided to deploy a team dedicated to arresting drivers and motor riders who jump the lights in order to curb the menace.
