Confusion rocks Eid celebration at Winneba

The Eid ul-Fitr celebration in Winneba was rocked by confusion when some Muslim youth engaged in a brawl after the Deputy Imam for the area, Alhaji Masuru Mohammed, had delivered his address after the prayers.

Two youth groups, apparently divided along party lines, fought in the presence of their leaders over whether or not the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, would be allowed to speak at the function.

Soon after the Municipal Chief Executive for Effutu, Mr Francis Ayikwei Tagoe, had finished delivering his speech, the misunderstanding between supporters of the MP and those opposed to him addressing the gathering, degenerated into fisticuffs.

It took the intervention of police officers on duty to control the youth and restore order at the prayer grounds at Wonsuom, a suburb of Winneba, on Wednesday.

Bone of contention

The leadership of the Muslim community had agreed that the only person to speak at the event was the MCE for the area.

After that piece of information had gone viral among the youth who were present, those who were in support of the MP were not happy and started murmuring in opposition to the decision by the leadership.

Onlookers

Passers-by and pedestrians looked on with astonishment as the youth who had been led in prayers fought among themselves at the end of the Ramadan.

Shock and surprise were visibly written on the faces of the people who had gathered at the prayer grounds as they could not fathom why the youth could fight among themselves over a decision not to allow the MP to speak at the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
