VIDEO: Former NPP MP and Export Promotion CEO Gifty Klenam defects to NDC
Former two-term Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam, has officially defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Klenam, who previously served in the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic and later as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC) under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, made her defection public on Thursday morning.
She announced her decision after acquiring her NDC membership card in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region.
Reasons for Defection
Addressing journalists today, Klenam cited ideological alignment and policy confidence as key motivations behind her decision to switch allegiance.
“Upon consultation with my family, I decided to join the NDC because it aligns with my values and vision for Mother Ghana,” she stated.

She further expressed strong belief in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, asserting that it presents the best roadmap for Ghana’s development. According to her, after thorough analysis of the party’s policies, she is convinced that former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership will steer the nation toward progress and prosperity.
She emphasized her desire to work closely with the party’s grassroots, empowering them and creating opportunities within the country to discourage the exodus of Ghanaian youth in search of better prospects abroad.
Klenam’s defection has ignited intense discussions within Ghana’s political circles, given her previous prominence within the ruling NPP. Having represented Lower West Akim on the NPP ticket and later holding a key government appointment, her move to the NDC is being interpreted as a significant political shift.
