Ga Central Assembly appeals for lands

The Ga Central Municipal Assembly (GCMA) has appealed to the chiefs and traditional authorities in the area to release lands to the assembly for infrastructural development.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Aristo Aryee, said the unavailability of lands for the assembly was making it difficult to carry out development projects, a situation that was hampering its progress.

He made this known in an interview with the Daily Graphic after a stakeholders meeting at the office of the assembly in Accra.

“In fact we are ready to buy the lands so that we can build hospitals, schools, police posts and other social amenities for the community.

“We have a lot of development projects we want to implement, but where do we get the lands for these?,” he asked.

For chiefs who might want to lease their lands to the assembly, Mr Aryee assured them that his outfit would make good use of “any land that we will receive for the benefit of the people in the area.”

Stakeholders forum
The one-day forum, which brought stakeholders, including chiefs, queen- mothers and assembly members together, was meant to brief them on the assembly’s plan of activities for the year.

It was also meant to seek their views, opinions and contributions as far as the development of the municipality is concerned.

It also gave participants the opportunity to deliberate on issues bothering them as well as ask the needed questions.

Earlier in his presentation, Mr Aryee charged the stakeholders present to be the ambassadors and intermediaries between the assembly and the people.

The role stakeholders played in that regard, he said, could not be underestimated, hence the need to play active roles for the development of the municipality.

Protection of properties
He also admonished them to help in the protection of the assembly’s properties in the area, as people usually destroyed the such properties.

He explained that as chiefs, they wielded a lot of power and had also been given enough mandate over their various jurisdictions, hence the need to assist the municipality in its growth.

“As traditional leaders, you must not hesitate to come around to inquire about issues you do not understand,” he advised.

Completion of gutters
On the completion of major drainage systems in the area, Mr Aryee stated that the assembly had allocated resources to ensure that they were completed by the end of the year.

He specifically mentioned that the main drainage system on the A-Lang-Blue Kiosk stretch of the road that connects to Kwashieman would be completed by the first quarter of the year.

The Presiding Member of the assembly, Mr Sheriff Fatah, bemoaned the activities of some landlords who connected their toilets to the gutters in the area.

He said such an act, which he described as uncalled for, should be frowned upon, because it had a lot of health implications for the residents.

The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Charles Kotei, asked the participants to carry out educational activities on the new pneumococcal-meningitis which has killed 30 Ghanaians.

In view of that, he used the occasion to educate the people on the signs and symptoms of the disease, and the need to report to the nearest health centre if they recognised any of them.
