The five-storey building project, estimated at GH¢4 million, is being funded from internally generated funds of the assembly, as well as donations from some institutions, organisations and individuals.

While on a visit to the project site at Weija, near Accra, yesterday,  the Daily Graphic saw the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, busily directing affairs.

It was also observed that the assembly was using its task force unit to augment efforts of the construction staff. So far, clearing of the land, which is part of their Weija premises, and digging of all the trenches for actual construction work to begin are complete.

The 300-room office project is expected to be completed within three years.

According to Mr Akwei Thompson, the Ga South Assembly was in dire need of office space to accommodate its staff, saying, “Currently, a small office within the premises was being shared by three departments.”

What that meant, he explained, was that the staff had to sit in turns at the offices to do their work or find tables under the trees to do their day’s administrative work.

He said the situation did not augur well for effective office work and work performance.

“As a CEO of the municipality, I do not even have an official residence, but that is not my priority, especially now that we have our office project going on.”

He said the assembly was currently renting their offices at a huge cost and expressed trust that on completion of their office project, some savings would be made.

He also said the assembly was committed to utilising both its human and material resources to bring development to the municipality.

In so doing, he said the assembly was “doing away with the bad culture of always relying or waiting for the central government for assistance and development.”

He said the “baby” municipality, which is vast in nature and character, lacked so many facilities, including roads, schools and hospitals.

For this, he said, the assembly was working very hard to meet the needs of the people by initiating a number of self-help-projects.

In this connection,he expressed gratitude to SAM-AB-SACK Construction Ltd for coming to the aid of the municipality with 200 bags of cement and two trips of 20 cubic metric chippings.

He said such show of support would go a long way to help the assembly meet its social obligations to the municipality and its environs.
