Ablekuma North results: Suit at Supreme Court injuncts collation of parliamentary results — Alhaji Muntaka

An application filed at the Supreme Court has injuncted the Ministry of the Interior and the National Election Security taskforce from providing security for the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, made this known on the floor of Parliament last Wednesday.

The response followed an urgent question filed by the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Okere, Daniel Nana Addo-Kenneth, on the specific arrangements the ministry had made to ensure the provision of adequate security for the collation and declaration of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

Contempt

Alhaji Muntaka noted that “to avoid acting in contempt of the court, the National Election Security taskforce is seeking the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice’s advice for the next line of action”.

The minister gave an assurance that the Election Security Taskforce was ready to provide the necessary security to the officials of the EC, representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as well as all the interested parties, when the motion at the Supreme Court was resolved.

About 62 polling station results of the Ablekuma North Constituency election in 2024 could not be collated due to electoral irregularities and violence.

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, members of the NPP Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by its leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marched to the Police Headquarters to petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide adequate security for the collation of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

Some political watchers and civil society organisations have urged the EC and the police to ensure fairness and respect for the democratic process in the collation and declaration of the election results in the Ablekuma North Constituency. - GNA
