Appointment of MDCEs in Ashanti: Dr Amoakohene urges party to guard against tribal sentiments
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has advised members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region to desist from tribal incitements ahead of the nomination of Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) by the President.
He said he was aware of a worrying trend of tribal agitations and misinformation in Mampong, Kwadaso, Kumawu, and Atwima Nwabiagya South constituencies and called for such negative tendencies to cease immediately in the interest of party unity and discipline.
"Such tribal incitement is dangerous and can potentially derail the confirmation processes of our yet-to-be-appointed MDCEs, especially considering the mixed composition of the assemblies across the region," a statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency said.
Tribal bigotry in Asante Mampong in particular, according to the statement, was unfortunate and a deliberate attempt by some individuals to incite tribal sentiments aimed at tarnishing his (Dr Amoakohene's) image and that of President John Dramani Mahama.
It explained that following the regional vetting process, only three names were duly submitted to the national secretariat for consideration regarding the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position in the Mampong Constituency.
Aggrieved aspirants
Some aggrieved aspirants subsequently appealed to the national secretariat, and it was the prerogative of the national leadership to either uphold or reject their appeal hence the addition of their names at the national level was entirely the decision of the national executive, the statement pointed out.
It said accusations that the region smuggled in additional names were completely false, malicious, pure hatred and prejudice, insisting that the region conducted its processes with transparency, equity, and fairness.
"As of today, the President has not made any MDCE appointments in the Ashanti Region and we urge party members to disregard any unofficial or speculative reports," the Regional Minister appealed.
The statement entreated members of the party not to allow parochial interests and divisive rhetoric to derail the gains of the party. — GNA
