Murtala was steadfast defender of NDC ideals — Kwetey
The late NDC MP for Tamale Central, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, was a bold voice and a steadfast defender of the party’s ideals, the party has stated.
“He used every platform, Parliament, the media, community gatherings, to project the NDC’s vision and protect its image.
His sharp intellect, grounded arguments, and fearless articulation of truth made him a trusted voice in national discourse and a rallying point for the grassroots,” it said.
Tribute
The General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, in a tribute in honour of Dr Muhammed, said his record in Tamale Central spoke to his deep commitment to tangible development.
He cited the renovation of schools, organising free classes and providing learning materials, establishing a tertiary education support fund and introducing a mobile library service.
Mr Kwetey said Dr Murtala also offered scholarships for medical students (47 at the time of his passing), supplied medical equipment and facilitated the construction of three health facilities among infrastructure and community development projects.
“Beyond his projects, Dr Murtala was a man of the people: approachable, empathetic, and unafraid to speak truth to power.
His political life was not merely about winning elections; it was about defending principles, building hope, and uplifting communities.
“He understood that the strength of the NDC lay in its bond with ordinary Ghanaians, and he worked tirelessly to strengthen that bond,” he said.
Parliament
Dr Murtala Muhammed was elected to Parliament in 2012 for the Nanton Constituency.
He quickly distinguished himself as an articulate advocate for the marginalised.
Though he lost his seat in 2016, his resilience shone through; in 2020, he returned to Parliament as MP for Tamale Central, securing re-election in 2024.
His ministerial service under President John Dramani Mahama saw him excel as Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, and later as Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry.
