NPP can win 2028 elections — Dr Bawumia

Former Vice-President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed confidence that the party can win the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections if it remains united, disciplined and works hard.

"I do not doubt that, notwithstanding the challenges ahead, of which there will be many, if we are united, disciplined and work hard, we will win the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections by the grace of God. It is still possible," he said.

"As politicians, we should always be guided by what is in the best interest of Ghana at all times,” he said.

Conference

Dr Bawumia made this assertion in his address at the NPP's National Annual Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon, in Accra, last Saturday.

The conference, attended by thousands of delegates, party executives and grassroots members, aimed to regroup and chart a path forward for the NPP after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

It was on the theme: "Rebuilding Together with Our Values."

The former Vice-President stressed the importance of prioritising Ghana's best interests in the party's decision-making processes.

Reflection

Dr Bawumia urged the party to reflect on its past performance and rebuild, with a focus on unity, discipline, and good governance.

He stressed that restructuring within the party should lead to tangible improvements in governance, not just electoral success.

Dr Bawumia called on party executives to "crack the whip" and maintain discipline within the party.

"To the leadership of the party, I ask that you will be firm and crack the whip so that discipline is maintained within our ranks," he said.

"It is with discipline, humility, lessons learnt and the pursuit of a common good for Ghana that we can become the refreshed party we desire," he added.

Dr Bawumia also praised former presidents J.A.Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what they were able to achieve during their tenure in office as presidents.

Internal attacks

Dr Bawumia called on party members to stop internal attacks and focus on the challenges posed by the opponents of the party, especially the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

"Let us stop the internal attacks now, and rather focus on the attempt by the NDC to undermine our democracy and rule of law," he said.

NPP General Secretary

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for failing to deliver on its promises.

He questioned the government’s commitment to good governance, citing rising economic hardship, the worsening menace of illegal mining (galamsey) and political victimisation through mass dismissals in public institutions.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, called for an end to hate campaigns and party sabotage to reclaim the party’s strength and unity.

He explained that such actions could undermine the party’s unity and progress.

“We must rebuild together, brick by brick, anchored in our values and in the unshakeable belief that no individual is bigger than the NPP.

This belief must reflect our tone, our language, our strategy and, most importantly, our posture towards one another,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated at the conference being held on the theme: “Rebranding together with our values.”
