Resource Ghana’s UN Mission to function effectively - Foreign Affairs Committee Vice-Chairman appeals to government

The Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Paul Apraku Twum Barimah, has appealed to the government to properly resource the Ghana Permanent Mission in New York in the United States of America to enable the staff to deliver quality service.

According to him, the mission currently operated with a fleet of four vehicles, which was not enough to handle the pressure it encountered in the performance of its duties.

Mr Barimah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, was briefing the Daily Graphic after an official visit to the mission in New York, USA.

He was in the US as part of activities of this year's United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, USA.

"The interesting part of this whole issue is that officials of ministries, metropolis, municipal and district assemblies depend on such facilities and the meagre resources of the mission when they travel.”

"They expect the mission to fund their intercity travels and sometimes using their bank cards to book accommodation," Mr Barimah said.

He said that practice needed to change, stressing that such officials should bear their own cost when travelling and not rely on the meagre resources of the mission.

"Besides, the cars owned and managed by the embassy must be increased to enable officials to contain the pressure and be able to deliver their services without obstacles," the Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said.
