Govt, stakeholders to inculcate nationalism in citizens

President John Dramani Mahama says the government is engaging the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to come up with policies and measures that will nurture nationalism in the citizenry.

The President expressed grave concern over the erosion of the country’s value system, giving way to materialism, in place of hard work, honesty and patriotism.

Addressing the second meeting of the Council of State at the Peduase Lodge yesterday, President Mahama said, “It is high time we inculcated national values in our children.”

He said the erosion of the value system made people materialistic and unpatriotic.

Patriotism

The President cited, among others, the way people removed bulbs fixed on the N1 Highway in broad daylight, an act that he said caused the taxpayer a colossal amount of money to replace.

He said the teaching of Civic Education in schools in the past made the past generation to be disciplined and nationalistic.

President Mahama observed that the integration of Civic Education with other subjects had posed a setback to pupils’ ability to imbibe values that would make them patriotic and underscored the need for the re-introduction of the subject in the school curriculum.

The economy

The President conceded that the past year had been challenging for the economy, among other areas, and cited the huge wage bill as a particular challenge.

He, however, said the government had made numerous interventions to put the economy on track, as outlined in the 2014 budget.

President Mahama announced that he would give the State of the Nation Address early next year to show the direction of the country and the need for the citizenry to have confidence in the country.

“The government will activate an industrial economy with much attention to industries, with the Association of Ghana Industries at the forefront,” he said.
