Jerry Akwei-Thompson spearheads Ga South Municipal’s development
The Ga South Municipal Assembly (GASMA) has spent about GH¢3,900,000.00 to upgrade roads within the municipality.

The assembly has also spent GH¢2,054,623.67 on school projects across the communities in the municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Jerry Akwei-Thompson, made this known at a durbar of chiefs, assembly members and residential associations to commemorate the 8th anniversary of the creation of the municipality at Weija last Wednesday.
Mr Akwei-Thompson also said GASMA had almost completed the first phase of an office complex to accommodate staff of the assembly.
Enumerating the road projects, the MCE said only six per cent of the asembly’s roads were in good shape but thankfully with assistance from the roads department and other donor funds about 40 per cent had been improved. He named the Ayigbe Town, Block Factory, Ash Bread, Amanfro, CP, Tetegu, Gbawe and the McCarthy Hill roads as some of those which had been rehabilitated, while others were ongoing.
Besides, the assembly has built an emergency accident ward for the Weija Hospital to take care of emergency situations that may occur within the municipality as the only emergency wards are located at Korle Bu and are mostly congested, leading to several untimely deaths.
Achievements
Mr Akwei-Thompson said the achievement had invariably improved the assembly’s revenue generation this year and that it collected almost 90 per cent of the targeted revenue by the mid-year. He expressed the hope that the assembly would exceed its target by the end of the year and the ensuing years to raise enough revenue to invest in more capital projects from its internally generated funds.
Current projects
Currently, the assembly is supporting the creation of large-scale projects such as office complexes, cultural edifices at its sandy beaches, educational institutions, health facilties, security, water and markets.

Mr Akwei-Thompson said the peculiar location of the assembly nearly led to the loss of its independence and identity and that it had to re-brand itself with the creation of a website-www.gsmaweija.com, the printing of a magazine and a calendar as well as the printing of a cloth with its logo to identify workers and other people related to the assembly.
He said over the past eight years, the assembly had focused on its core mission to provide services for the residents of the municipality in a dynamic and sustainable way and that since then, the municipality had flourished as a centre for excellence and education.
The MCE stated that with the opening of the West Hills Mall and other big commercial enterprises, the municipality has expanded and is expected to expand even further.
Both the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Isaac Vanderpuije, and the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Weija/Gbawe, Ms Darko-Opoku, commended the assembly for its achievements and advised the staff to be transparent and accountable to the people.
