The late Joseph Boakye Dankwa Adu

Killing of Abuakwa North MP sends worrying signals

The nation woke up last Tuesday to very shocking news regarding the death of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Joseph Boakye Dankwa Adu.

News of his killing has sent shock waves to not only his colleague members of parliament but also to the entire country bringing  into sharp focus the need for MPs to be provided protection by the state.

The issue of providing MPs with security has been on the table for a long time now. The matter achieved formal recognition when more than a decade ago a series of burglary occurred at Sakumono, a suburb of Accra, where quite a number of MPs stayed.

It would have been easier providing security for them in a group when they were housed there.

But it is not a lost case. The time to look into the matter critically is now or never.

One difficulty associated with providing personal police protection for the MPs has to do with their sheer numbers.

However, I think that the Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu hits the nail right on the head when he questions why district chief executives who are also many have personal police protection as against MPs who make up one arm of government.

The police have already given strong indication to resolve the matter by having the matter transferred from the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters to the Head Office of the Criminal Investigations Department, CID. It is hoped that this time round the culprits involved in this gruesome murder will be found out and made to face the full rigours of the law.

Unresolved murders

The number of unsolved murders over the last decade or so has left many people bewildered as to what exactly is going on in Ghana presently and has raised questions of our security apparatuses, particularly the police.

I agree with former President J. A. Kufuor when he urges the government to focus on providing the security agencies with the required gadgets needed to keep them in tune with the digital ways of getting information.

The world has grown sophisticated and so have the criminals developed wily ways of not getting caught. But, in this struggle of good versus evil, good must of necessity triumph.

NPP in shock

At this point it is quite too early to point to political mischief and so the advice will go to all and sundry to refrain from shooting off on that tangent because already there is tension as the country moves towards election 2016. It will be prudent to leave the matter into the hands of the police, who we expect to do a good job.

Afia versus Kennedy

Before the unfortunate incident of the murder of the MP, was another shocking incident that involved a public spat between two public figure: Afia Schwarzenegger and Hon. Kennedy Adjepong, MP for Assin Central.

To say the least, it was disgusting to hear the two spew unprintable words at each other.

It is good that Okay FM has come out to apologise to the public for the social blunder caused by its presenter.

It is expected that Mr Adjepong would also come out to apologise to the public for his public tantrums which went way overboard.
