Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu urges NPP unity ahead of 2028 Elections
Former Majority Leader in Parliament and stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called on members of the party to prioritise unity and discipline as they look beyond the 2024 elections and strategise for victory in 2028.
In a reflective interview on Joy Prime on Monday, July 21, 2025, the veteran Suame MP discussed his transition from frontline parliamentary leadership, internal party dynamics, and the future of the NPP.
“I believe leadership is not always about being in the front seat. Sometimes, you serve best when you're offering guidance and mentoring from behind,” he remarked, addressing his decision to step back from his position as Majority Leader earlier this year.
Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasised the importance of maintaining the NPP’s core values. “The New Patriotic Party has always survived on discipline and unity. We must remember what binds us, our vision for Ghana. No matter our disagreements, we must rally behind our presidential candidate and work toward victory in 2024,” he said.
His comments come at a time when the NPP is navigating internal adjustments following the 2024 electoral loss. Despite stepping aside from active leadership, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says he is still deeply engaged in the party’s activities, offering strategic support from behind the scenes.
On the topic of party leadership and succession, he offered high praise for NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Describing the former Vice-President as “a capable leader with a clear grasp of the economic and political challenges Ghana faces,” he insisted the party still has a strong foundation of visionary leadership.
Responding to critics who suggest the NPP has lost touch with its grassroots, the former Parliamentary Affairs Minister acknowledged there was more engagement to be done. However, he expressed confidence in the party’s connection with its base, urging the youth to actively participate in shaping the NPP’s future.
“I have served and I continue to serve. My interest is not personal gain but what’s best for Ghana and the NPP. If called upon to serve again in any capacity, I will not hesitate; but for now, I am focused on helping the party win and making Ghana better,” he stated when asked whether he still harboured political ambitions.
