Let’s present best candidates in upcoming NDC primaries— Alhaji Dicko

A senior Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, Alhaji Nuhu Alhassan Dicko, has called on the party to elect the best candidates in the upcoming primaries so as to win more votes for the party during the 2016 elections.

According to Alhaji Dicko, electing the best candidates was key to maximising votes for the NDC during the presidential and parliamentary ballots and especially in the Ashanti Region where the party was poised to achieve a million votes in the 2016 election.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Alhaji Dicko, who was also the 2012 parliamentary candidate (PC) of the NDC for the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, expressed the view that the party would need to strategise particularly in the Ashanti Region in order to achieve the target of winning one million votes in the region.

He said among the aspiring parliamentary candidates, the party would need to look out for those who were dedicated to the party and had won the confidence of the masses in their respective constituencies.

Strategy

Alhaji Dicko said one of the best ways of recruiting best PCs was by maintaining 70 per cent of former PCs.

This, to him, was because most former PCs were already well known in terms of marketing themselves and had already won the confidence of the delegates and other party members.

“I have the strongest conviction that if the party, through delegates at the primaries, is able to re-elect 70 per cent of former parliamentary candidates, the party will help in maximising votes in the 2016 election,” he stated.

He said though it was not mandatory or constitutional to maintain former PCs, the party would need to resort to that strategy and welcome a few new faces.

Regional executives

He said a critical area that the party needed to watch concerned the situation where some regional executives were bent on contesting as PCs.

He reasoned that that idea must not be encouraged because “as regional executives, their roles as officers of the party are as crucial and equally important as those of a PC.”

Caution

He asked all aspiring PCs to be circumspect and respectful in their campaigns, expressing the belief that it would help in unity and victory.
Again, he advised aspiring PCs to be altruistic and have the victory of the party at heart.
