The Kumbungu MP has been nominated for the position of Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) to serve the unexpired term of Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas.

Following his nomination, it remains unclear whether he will be able to combine both positions as MP and Secretary General.

But speaking to journalists at Kumbungu last Sunday, Alhaji Mumuni said “I will consult all the major stakeholders which include my party, Parliament, my constituents and the government and when all the consultations are exhausted, I will be able to tell whether I will be able to combine the two positions or I will stand down as MP.”

The MP was in the area to formally announce his nomination as Secretary General of the ACP to his constituents and the implications of the nomination, which he viewed as an honour done to the people of Kumbungu.

Even before the people would officially hear the news about the elevation of their MP to such an international position from him, they were already in a jubilant mood before he could arrive in the town.

At about 10 O’clock in the morning when news got to the town that the MP was on his way to Kumbungu from Tamale, a large crowd gathered at the outskirts of the town near the Star Oil filling station waiting patiently for him amidst drumming and singing.

Immediately the vehicle carrying Alhaji Mumuni was sighted, the drumming and singing reached a crescendo.

Alhaji Mumuni responded to their cheers and praises with a deep satisfying smile, intermittent waving of hand and clenching of his right fist.

The vehicles were not enough to carry everybody and those who could not get vehicles to board trotted along with the vehicles till the convoy arrived at the Kumbung-Naa’s palace.

There, Alhaji Mumuni thanked the people for their continuous support and their confidence in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the years.

He said the NDC in government had always recognised the people of Kumbungu by giving key positions to their representatives either in Parliament or in the Executive.

He said his nomination as running mate to the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills in the 2004 elections epitomised the level of respect that the party had for the Kumbungu Constituency and its people.

He then went ahead to explain what the ACP was and his position in it as Secretary General.

Speaking on behalf of the Kumbung-Naa, Abu Iddi, the Zagyuri-Naa, thanked President John Mahama for nominating their MP for such an international position.

He said the chiefs and people of Kumbungu were very grateful to him for such a gesture as they believed it would put the name of Kumbungu on the world map.
