NDC, NPP activists fight in Tamale radio studio

A discussion programme on North Star FM, a private radio station in Tamale, degenerated into fisticuffs yesterday when the two discussants who represented the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) exchanged blows, resulting in injuries to the NDC representative.

The two, Zakaria Mahama, a member of the Northern Regional Communications Team of the NDC, and Frederick Tahiru of the NPP, were discussing utterances allegedly made by a former youth organiser of the NDC in Fomena to the effect that the ruling party was stockpiling weapons in readiness for battle with the opposition.

Tahiru, in a reaction to the statement, said the NPP would not be intimidated and was ready to engage the ruling government in any struggle.

The host of the morning show at the station, Abubakar Siddick Sulemana, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said the comment by Tahiru did not go down well with Mahama, who described the NPP representative as an extremist and one who was not civilised.

Sulemana said he asked Mahama to withdraw the statement and apologise to Tahiru, which he did, but Tahiru appeared not to be satisfied with the apology and punched Mahama, resulting in a fight.

Sulemana said Mahama sustained injuries on the chin and was sent to a private clinic in Tamale for treatment.

The Northern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Mr Sulu Salifu, and the Regional Communications Director of the NDC, Mohammed Mumin, both confirmed the incident in interviews with the Daily Graphic and added that both parties had agreed to cooperate with the police to resolve the issue amicably.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, also confirmed the incident and said both parties were cooperating with the police to resolve the issue.
