Christian Council calls for issues-based campaign

The Christian Council of Ghana will embark on a series of programmes to ensure that the 2016 general election is issues-based.

The programme will also enlighten the electorate on their responsibilities to ensure that they (electorate) elected competent leaders and not unduly influenced by material gains to vote for candidates.

The General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, who announced this in Kumasi last Tuesday, however, did not elaborate on the exact programmes the council would be engaging in to accomplish its set targets.

Speaking at the annual ministers’ conference of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Kumasi, Rev. Dr Opuni-Frimpong noted that the council would seek to check situations where politicians took advantage of the electorate by influencing them with cash and other items.

Issues
He said issues such as quality and accessible education, health care, environmental protection and sustainability, job creation, security, among other things, should drive the electioneering.

Rev. Dr Opuni-Frimpong spoke against the use of negative utterances and actions by politicians to put fear in the people.

That situation, he said, was often reinforced by some false prophets claiming negative things would happen to the country.

Those prophets, he said, often created tension among the electorate, especially when their preferred political parties did not win.

Education
Touching on the computerised School Selection Placement System, Rev. Dr Opuni-Frimpong, expressed grave concern about the rate at which a system meant to solve problems was leading to nightmares for teachers, students and parents.
